Magento Enterprise 1.11 and Community 1.6 are shaping up to be another release packed with very valuable features. Here is a preview of one new capability in this release – persistent shopping cart – which enables merchants to segment customers better and tailor their product offering to better serve each customer.

Persistent shopping cart is available with Enterprise 1.10 for customers who are logged in – during their active session. In general, the feature preserves information about customers across sessions, browsers and devices. This feature has been made even better with Enterprise 1.11. Customers who logged in to a store at least once in the past will be able to view the content of their shopping cart in subsequent sessions. Merchants will be able to apply customer segmentation rules to the customer’s successive visits to the site.

With persistent shopping cart, a customer can add a product to their shopping cart from one browser session at work, review his shopping cart and change the product configuration from his mobile device and then complete the transaction at home with another computer. The persistent behavior feature reduces consumer frustration when they try to access their shopping cart from multiple browser sessions. This feature also enables merchants to provide promotion, according to pre-defined segmentation rules, encouraging consumers to add items to the shopping cart and complete their purchase.

In the upcoming release of Enterprise 1.11, we are extending the persistent shopping cart capabilities beyond the shopping cart to other features including wish lists, recently ordered items, view and comparison and customer group membership.

How does it work?

Magento stores a long term cookie that defines the persistent lifetime behavior in the backend configuration. This allows us to write the long term cookie and store it in each browser once the customer logs in or creates an account using that browser. The long term cookie allows us to re-create some of the session they had when they were logged in previously. For example, we will be able to re-create the shopping cart for a specific user upon their next request. It does not allow the customer or another user to access sensitive information. For example, the user will not be able to complete the checkout process or access account information unless they are officially logged in. Persistent shopping cart is completely configurable by merchants, provides an additional way for the merchant to strengthen customer satisfaction and loyalty and helps increase conversion rates.
