Global manufacturing and technology company Emerson (www.emerson.com) has combined its Aperture division and its recently acquired Avocent (www.avocent.com) business into a new division, which will be led by Stephen C. Hassell, who has served as Emerson's vice president and chief information officer for the past five years.

Emerson acquired Avocent in December 2009 and Aperture in February 2008. According to Emerson's Tuesday announcement, the new division is part of Emerson Network Power (www.emersonnetworkpower.com), and is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama. The unit combines Aperture's powerful infrastructure software and Avocent's management systems division, which offers access and control of the physical aspects of network devices and servers, to provide a robust portfolio of data center infrastructure management solutions.

Together with Emerson Network Power's power systems and energy management and precision cooling, the new division creates a unique rack-to-room infrastructure management solution, helping data center managers address their energy efficiency challenges.

"This is an important growth opportunity for Emerson as we offer our data center customers enhanced, game-changing technology and services," said Emerson Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President David N. Farr. "Steve brings leadership, experience, expertise and a strong customer perspective to his new role."

As vice president and CIO, Hassell was responsible for Emerson's global IT strategy, including hardware, software, and services, as well as its telecommunications and data center infrastructure.  His replacement as CIO has yet to be named.

Hassell's team is in the midst of a global consolidation of Emerson's more than 100 data centers into four. It recently opened the company's flagship, $50 million data center in St. Louis that Emerson anticipates will receive LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

"We are ushering in a new era in data center management," Hassell said in a statement. "The market is ripe for an infrastructure management solution capable of enhancing energy and operational efficiency while improving availability. I believe that our combined talents uniquely position us to deliver a one-of-a-kind solution to customers throughout the world."

Hassell came to Emerson in 2004 from Invensys (www.invensys.com), where he was CIO. Prior to Invensys, Hassell worked in Northrop Grumman's (www.northropgrumman.com) Newport News division. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the US Naval Academy and served as an officer in the US Navy. He holds a master's in management from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University.
