(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Open-source software developer Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) announced via its blog Monday it has added a second major data center in Phoenix to meet the demand of its popular open source software projects, including the Firefox Web browser and Thunderbird email client.
The organization will house six racks and about 80 servers at the Phoenix ONE data center operated by i/o Data Centers, which is one of the world's largest data centers.
The newly added data center space in Phoenix will support Mozilla's primary facility in San Jose, with production apps operating in both locations.
In addition to this space, Mozilla has space at smaller satellite facilities in Amsterdam and Beijing.
In a blog post, Matthew Zeier from the Mozilla operations team writes:
"Since 2006, we've tripled the amount of data center floor space (and tripled our IT/Ops team), grew our user base 8.75 times and now push 18x the bandwidth. Sure, in comparison to other sites, this growth is small. It's no Facebook. But it's still a significant amount of infrastructure that supports 350 million users and the world?s most popular web browser (we're at about one engineer to 43.7m users (or one to 800 servers)."
The 538,000 square foot Phoenix ONE, which opened last June, features solar power and thermal energy storage.
With 180,000 square feet of available raised floor space in its first phase, phase II is already underway, which will offer an additional 180,000 square feet.
Phoenix ONE is installing a massive rooftop array of solar panels, which will eventually create as much as 4.5MW of power for the facility.
In looking to expand its data center space, Zeier said Mozilla was most concerned about connectivity and power, as well as the ability to cool it.
