As part of President Barack Obama's $787 billion stimulus plan launched last year, the $47 million will help fund software and other technologies for 14 projects, Energy Secretary Steven Chu told reporters on Wednesday via a conference call.
The plan is to decrease energy consumption and costs within the IT and telecommunications industries, while the funding helps to "create jobs and ensure the sector remains competitive," Chu said

The companies will use these funds to purchase equipment and software, power supply and cooling systems.
The energy savings generated by the plan will amount to the equivalent of electricity used by 2 million homes, Chu said.
