Software and services company Flexiant (www.flexiant.com) has officially launched, announcing a suite of software and services designed to let web hosting businesses, data centre operators, and telecom companies offer cloud computing-based services to their customers.

According to the Monday announcement, Flexiscale's Amazon-like public cloud technology and the team behind it transferred to a new entity, Flexiant Limited, entirely focused on further development of the Flexiscale platform and making it available to other operators.

The launch follows an "over-subscribed" funding round that raised approximately ?1 million ($1.45 million), allowing it to acquire Flexiscale, a cloud computing technology developed by hosting services provider XCalibre Communications (www.xcalibre.co.uk). The funding also provided Flexiant with working capital to further develop the technology. Having been developed by XCalibre, Flexiscale's technology has its origins in the web hosting sector in order to provide a flexible and cost-effective service to its own customer base.

"Flexiscale is the most exciting Internet infrastructure technology I have seen for ten years," chief executive officer Alex Bligh said in a statement. A serial entrepreneur, Bligh has helped start several successful technology businesses, including business to business Internet service provider Xara Networks (www.xara.com), UK Internet domain registry Nominet (www.nominet.org.uk), and co-location provider Redbus Interhouse (www.red-bus.com).

"Flexiant's recently completed funding round will allow us to exploit the full potential of Flexiscale by licensing it to the web hosting market," he said. "Tony Lucas has pioneered cloud computing for the past five years and I believe that we have pulled together the right team to change forever the technology used for Internet hosting."

According to the company, Flexiant will allow hosting providers to offer highly scalable services at realistic prices. Servers using Flexiscale technology can be provisioned or removed nearly instantly, instead of taking days or weeks. Flexiscale lets spare resources be shared between servers, reducing the need for capital investment, and lowering power consumption, thereby reducing the host's operating costs and carbon footprint.

Flexiscale founder Tony Lucas said there will be profound changes in the hosting market in the coming decade as affordable, scalable services reduce both operating costs and carbon emissions. "The success of Flexiscale to date means that we are in a strong position to lead the way as the sector evolves and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead," Lucas said in a statement.
